Who is going to replace Telarc with uncompromised natural DSD recorded SACDs of New Jazz, New Blues, New Film Music, Late Romantic and Modern tonal classical music?

I've been watching new SACD releases for the year and a half since Telarc has quit releasing SACDs.  With the exception of SHM-SACDs, which I cannot afford, very little music of interest to me is being released, especially DSD recorded.

Telarc excelled in:

  • New Jazz recordings by living Jazz legends as well as younger Jazz newcomers
  • New Blues recordings by living Blues legends as well as younger Blues newcomers
  • Film Music, mostly from the Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops
  • Late Romantic large-scale orchestral classical music
  • Modern tonal classical music

What little Jazz and Blues being released now is older analog recordings, not brand new DSD or even high resolution PCM recordings with the exception of 1 or 2 Chesky SACDs per year.

NO ONE is recording new Film music for SACD release!

Exton of Japan does still release new DSD recorded SACDs of Late Romantic large-scale orchestral classical music however all new releases are in Stereo only.  Problem is limited distribution and high costs.  PentaTone is still releasing orchestral music as well and most of it either analog or DSD recorded.  As well as the few recordings done by Ivan Fischer and Budapest Festival Orchestra for Channel Classics, who otherwise specialize in chamber music.   However no recording company have the breath and width of the repertoire of Telarc's magnificent sounding SACDs.

It seems most new classical SACDs are chamber and solo music and most new orchestral classical SACDs are now of the earlier Classical, Renaissance and Baroque periods.  I find this totally unacceptable, thus another reason I turn more and more to high resolution downloads.

For me Telarc leaving SACD is the biggest disaster the format has ever faced and I am greatly saddened by it!

  1. Dear Teresa

This is Todd Garfinkle of MA Recordings. As it seems that you are involved with Hi Rez, if you have not already, you should get your hands on a Korg MR-2000S recording device. For an audiophile, they are not that expensive, retailing for about 2400 USD. This unit records at 5.6448 MHz (double SACD) and should knock your socks off, even out of the box. I have been using the MR Series recorders for more than 3 years now and they perform very well. You should hear my 5.6448 MHz files........

    Best Wishes

  2. Thanks Todd,

Any plans on releasing them on SACD or some other high resolution format? I gave a favorable review to your sampler MA on SA

in 2006 which were all from high resolution PCM. I would love to hear your DSD recordings, especially at double speed.

  3. Hi Teresa, I'm the founder of Blue Coast Records and Downloads NOW!. At our studio, we are committed to analog recording, DSD mixing and high resolution downloads.

Recently, we have released the Blue Coast Collection as DSD downloads.

Our Downloads NOW! platform is available to all artists and labels and can accept all formats. This weekend we will debut Vijay Iyer's Solo piano recording on ACT. Here's a preview.

Blue Coast Records also has some free DSD downloads for music lovers to try out and see which system makes sense to use.

With Audiogate from Korg now being a free download, we anticipate an increase of interest for DSD.

I hope we can release some of Todd's work on MA Recordings as well. If you have any questions, please contact me at cookie@bluecoastrecords.com

Thanks for keeping the faith for SACD and DSD. I agree that it is an incredible sounding format.

  5. Next to Telarc, I like Reference Recordings SACDs the best, however they only have three so far. Most of my other favorite recordings companies are hit and miss affairs, some great SACDs and not so great SACDs. It seems that Telarc and Reference Recordings are the only companies to hit a home run with me 99% of the time.

My third favorite is Exton, they are DSD recorded but often use too many microphones. Sometimes they have almost lifelike deep bass other times it is more thin. Sometimes they sound very realistic other times not so much.

I also love the best Channel Classics, PentaTone and IsoMike DSD recorded SACDs.

Of the out of print SACDs, I like the DMP DSD recorded SACDs and the AudioQuest DSD and Analog recorded SACDs.

Sad to say, none of the companies have the absolute sonic realism of Telarc. So no, they have no replacement yet. Telarc SACDs are the only SACDs good enough to judge the superior qualities of the SACD format, or any other equipment for that matter IMHO. THEY WILL HAVE TO RIP MY TELARC SACDs FROM MY COLD DEAD HANDS!
